Curriculum

The UMMC SOM offers a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The four-year course of study is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

The medical education curriculum comprises approximately 150 weeks of instruction over a four-year period in the foundational and clinical sciences.

The first two years or the preclinical phase offers integrated instruction across systems while incorporating content in the basic sciences. Learning is facilitated through small-group discussions, laboratory experiences, lecture, computer-assisted learning, and independent study.

Most students take Step 1 of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) prior to beginning the third year which is mainly the clinical phase of the program. During the clinical phase, students participate in team care of patients in the University Hospitals and Clinics and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, UMMC Grenada and various community settings to complete core clerkships in their third year. The required procedural skills associated with ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) and the documentation of skills in required procedures must be completed in the third year.
